IF you would be so kind as to notice - warding is MANDATORY (As is Baron and Dragon control, but that's for another article..). For..like..everybody. NOT just the support. It used to be where the support would do the majority of the warding - yes. The reason why I say used to be is because of the major kinda-recent-but-not-so-much-any-more buff of the upgraded warding trinkets. Which brings me to my next point I'd like to emphasize:

Let's do some simple math from a supports perspective.

Sightstone = 800 Gold

Upgrade Trinket = 250

Gold Difference = 550

Max amount of wards on the map allowed at any time per player = 3

Amount of wards you can have out at any time per player (Sightstone) = 3

Amount of wards you can have out at any time per player (Upgraded Trinket) = 3

The literal only difference between a sightstone and an upgraded trinket is that a sightstone may allow you more immidiate access to wards. However, the warding trinket (once you have it a few minutes) will easily allow you to keep an area warded, and warded well because it can stack now like an Akali ult. Also, consider the fact that you can have up to 5 people with this upgraded trinket on a team. That means that you can actually have 15 wards out + 5 pink wards out on the map at all times. I mean, good luck convincing people to upgrade their trinket or remebering to use it but yeah, the potential is basically game winning.

Regular stealth wards bought pre level 9 will easily hold you over if used properly.

Also, as a support, that extra item slot can be well utilized with another support item or character/role based item that will allow you to accomplish your job better. The totem is basically as good as a sightstone, and arguably exponentially better because it can be used by everybody on the team. ALTHOUGH, it can be a very smart idea to still get a sightstone and go for an upgraded red trinket instead (or an upgraded vision totem *same as stealth totem just for pink wards* if they have someone with an annoying invis).

Note: This item is absolutely wonderful on Lee Sin and Katerina, although since Lee tends to want wards right when he needs them, getting an early sightstone to be later replaced by upgraded trinket is smart.
